Overview - Short Inca Trail 2 Days
Experience one of the most memorable ways to reach Machu Picchu on our Short Inca Trail 2 Days, a compact trekking adventure that follows the final section of the historic Inca road network.
Rather than completing the four-day Classic Inca Trail, this itinerary allows you to access the trail near Km 104 and spend one rewarding day hiking through cloud forest, waterfalls, stone stairways, archaeological sites, and spectacular mountain landscapes.
The journey includes a guided visit to Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive Inca complexes along the route, before continuing toward Intipunku – the Sun Gate. Here, the trail reveals its greatest reward: your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu from above.
After descending to Aguas Calientes and spending the night in a comfortable hotel, return to Machu Picchu the following morning for a professionally guided visit through the official circuit assigned to Inca Trail travelers.
With official permits, train transportation, accommodation, selected meals, professional guiding, and essential travel logistics organized in advance, this 2 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an excellent choice for travelers seeking authentic trekking and archaeology without camping.

Short Inca Trail 2 Days Itinerary
Cusco – Inca Trail – Sun Gate – Aguas Calientes
Early Departure from Cusco
Your Short Inca Trail 2 Days experience begins early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco and transportation toward Ollantaytambo.
The drive normally takes approximately 1½ hours before arriving at the railway station.
Scenic Train to the Trail Access
Board the tourist train and follow the Urubamba River into the increasingly lush landscape surrounding Machu Picchu.
The traditional Short Inca Trail begins at Km 104 – Chachabamba, at approximately 2,150–2,170 meters above sea level.
At the official checkpoint, present the original passport or identification document associated with your trekking permit.
Enter the Inca Trail
When Km 104 is operating, begin with the archaeological site of Chachabamba before joining the ascending Inca path.
Continue through cloud forest, waterfalls, native vegetation, and sections of original stone trail while gaining elevation toward Wiñay Wayna.
Explore Wiñay Wayna
Reach Wiñay Wayna at approximately 2,650 meters and explore its remarkable terraces, stone buildings, ceremonial sectors, stairways, and water system with your professional guide.
Afterward, enjoy your included box lunch before continuing along the final section of the trek.
Walk to the Sun Gate
Continue across forested pathways and Inca stone steps toward Intipunku, located at approximately 2,720 meters.
From the Sun Gate, enjoy your first dramatic panoramic view of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains.
Arrive Above Machu Picchu
Descend from Intipunku toward the panoramic areas above Machu Picchu. Access on this first afternoon follows the official regulations established for Inca Trail visitors.
After completing the trail, take the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes. The Day 1 downhill bus is paid separately from the base package.
Hotel & Dinner in Aguas Calientes
Check into your hotel and enjoy an included dinner in town before resting for your second Machu Picchu experience the following morning.
Guided Machu Picchu Experience – Cusco
Breakfast & Shuttle to Machu Picchu
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and take the included shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu – Circuit 3B
Join your professional guide for an approximately 2 to 2½ hour visit through the official circuit assigned to Inca Trail travelers.
For 2026, Inca Trail tickets are linked to Circuit 3 – Route 3-B. The route explores important archaeological areas in the lower sector of Machu Picchu while your guide explains the history, architecture, engineering, and cultural significance of the site.
Machu Picchu operates with controlled one-way circuits, so visitors cannot wander freely outside the route assigned to their ticket.
Optional Mountain Experience
If you have reserved an additional mountain ticket, follow the entrance time indicated on your ticket. Optional routes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain require separate advance reservations and are subject to availability.
Return Train & Transfer to Cusco
After returning by shuttle bus to Aguas Calientes, collect your belongings and have lunch independently according to your train schedule.
Board the return train to Ollantaytambo and complete the journey back to Cusco by tourist transportation.
IMPORTANT
Machu Picchu Circuit 2 is currently sold out through November. At the moment, availability for Circuit 2 remains only for selected dates in December.
If you are planning to visit Machu Picchu before December, we can still arrange the best available alternative route, prioritizing Circuit 3 or Circuit 1, depending on availability for your travel date.
For travelers visiting in December, we strongly recommend booking as early as possible, as Circuit 2 is the most requested route and remaining spaces can sell out quickly.
All Machu Picchu tickets are subject to official availability at the time of booking. Once your reservation is confirmed, we will inform you of the circuit and entrance time assigned to your visit.
