Overview - Machu Picchu Tour by Car 2 Days
Discover an adventurous and budget-friendly way to reach the legendary Inca citadel on our Machu Picchu Tour by Car 2 Days. This alternative journey combines an impressive overland route to Hidroelectrica, scenic hiking through cloud-forest landscapes, an overnight stay in Aguas Calientes, and a professionally guided visit to Machu Picchu.
Instead of completing the traditional journey entirely by train, you will travel by tourist vehicle from Cusco to Hidroelectrica. From there, continue on foot toward Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) along a mostly flat railway-side route surrounded by tropical vegetation, rivers, mountains, and constantly changing scenery.
After spending the night close to Machu Picchu, the following morning is dedicated to exploring the archaeological sanctuary with a professional guide. Your entrance ticket and round-trip shuttle bus are included, allowing you to reach the citadel comfortably before beginning the return journey to Hidroelectrica and Cusco.
The Machu Picchu via Hidroelectrica 2 Days experience is ideal for active travelers looking for an affordable alternative that combines nature, hiking, road travel, and one of Peru’s most extraordinary archaeological destinations.

Machu Picchu Tour by Car 2 Days Itinerary
Cusco – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes
Morning Departure from Cusco
Your Machu Picchu Tour by Car 2 Days begins in the morning with check-in at our travel agency in Cusco between approximately 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Once all travelers have arrived and the departure details have been coordinated, you will board the tourist vehicle and begin the road journey toward Hidroelectrica.
Overland Journey to Hidroelectrica
The journey from Cusco to Hidroelectrica generally takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. During the drive, the landscape changes considerably as the route leaves the high Andes and gradually descends toward warmer and more humid areas.
Mountain scenery, deep valleys, cloud-forest vegetation, and changing climates make this road journey an important part of the experience. Short stops may be made depending on road conditions and the needs of the group.
Lunch at Hidroelectrica
Upon reaching Hidroelectrica, you will enjoy an included lunch at a local restaurant. This break provides time to rest, prepare your backpack, refill water if necessary, and get ready for the walking section toward Aguas Calientes.
Hike from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes
After lunch, begin the scenic Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes hike. The route follows the railway corridor through lush vegetation, river scenery, and the dramatic mountains surrounding Machu Picchu.
The walk covers approximately 11 km and generally takes between 2½ and 3½ hours, depending on walking pace and conditions. The terrain is predominantly flat, making it less technically demanding than a mountain trek, although travelers should be comfortable walking for several hours.
This section is one of the defining experiences of the Machu Picchu by Car route and provides an opportunity to enjoy the cloud-forest environment before reaching Machu Picchu Pueblo.
Arrival and Hotel Check-In
Once you arrive in Aguas Calientes, you will proceed to the hotel included in your reservation. After check-in, take some time to shower, change clothes, and recover from the day’s journey.
Dinner and Free Evening
An included dinner will be served at a local restaurant. The rest of the evening is free to explore Machu Picchu Pueblo, relax at your hotel, or optionally visit the Aguas Calientes hot springs at your own expense.
Before resting, you will receive the essential information for your Machu Picchu visit the following morning, including the schedule required for Day 2.
Machu Picchu – Hidroelectrica – Cusco
Breakfast and Preparation for Machu Picchu
Day 2 begins with an early breakfast at your accommodation. Your exact morning departure will depend on the Machu Picchu entrance time confirmed for your reservation.
Because the itinerary requires you to return to Hidroelectrica for the afternoon vehicle to Cusco, your Machu Picchu visit must be scheduled at a suitable morning time, subject to official ticket availability.
Shuttle Bus to Machu Picchu
At the coordinated time, you will head to the shuttle bus departure point in Aguas Calientes. Your bus ticket to Machu Picchu is included.
The uphill ride takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes before reaching the entrance of the archaeological sanctuary.
Guided Visit to Machu Picchu
Enter the legendary Inca citadel and begin an approximately 2 to 2½-hour guided visit with a professional local guide.
Throughout the experience, you will learn about Machu Picchu’s history, architecture, engineering, cultural importance, and relationship with the surrounding Andean environment.
The exact viewpoints, terraces, ceremonial sectors, and archaeological structures visited depend on the official circuit and route assigned to your entrance ticket.
Return Bus to Aguas Calientes
After completing your guided visit, take the included shuttle bus back to Aguas Calientes. Once in town, collect your belongings and prepare for the return walk.
Lunch on Day 2 is not included, and travelers should carefully consider the available time because reaching Hidroelectrica on schedule is essential.
Return Hike to Hidroelectrica
Begin the return walk from Aguas Calientes toward Hidroelectrica, once again following the railway-side route through the cloud forest.
Allow approximately 3 hours for this section, depending on your walking pace and conditions along the route.
All passengers must arrive at Hidroelectrica between approximately 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in order to meet the tourist transportation back to Cusco.
Return Transportation to Cusco
Once the group has assembled at Hidroelectrica, board the vehicle and begin the final overland journey to Cusco.
The drive generally takes approximately 6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Arrival in Cusco is expected in the evening, marking the end of your Machu Picchu Tour by Car 2 Days via Hidroelectrica.
IMPORTANT
Machu Picchu Circuit 2 is currently sold out through November. At the moment, availability for Circuit 2 remains only for selected dates in December.
If you are planning to visit Machu Picchu before December, we can still arrange the best available alternative route, prioritizing Circuit 3 or Circuit 1, depending on availability for your travel date.
For travelers visiting in December, we strongly recommend booking as early as possible, as Circuit 2 is the most requested route and remaining spaces can sell out quickly.
All Machu Picchu tickets are subject to official availability at the time of booking. Once your reservation is confirmed, we will inform you of the circuit and entrance time assigned to your visit.
